Zen meditation, popularly known as Zazen, is a method of meditation belonging to the ‘Zen Buddhist’ psychology. People (in many parts of the world) also call it “the practice that makes a person think about not thinking.”

Zazen has many similarities to mindfulness-based meditation. In fact, they are both the same if a few differences are to be excluded.

Where Has The Word ‘Zen’ come From?

Zen is the pronunciation of the Chinese word “Chan” in Japan; whereas ‘Chan’ is the pronunciation of the word “Dhyana” in China. Dhyana literally translates to “focus” which more or less means meditation.

English barrister Travers Christmas Humphreys, who was one of the most significant pioneers of the Buddhist tradition and teachings in Britain, once said that “Zen is a word and a subject that is vulnerable to misunderstanding”.

The Origin Of And Development of Zen Meditation

Zen meditation – the ancient Buddhist practice – has the history of its origin dating back to the 7th-century Tang Dynasty in China. This ancient Chinese tradition was then spread to other Asian lands, including Japan and Korea.

This practice was, however, brought to China by Bodhidharma, who was a Buddhist monk hailing from the Indian land. Bodhidharma introduced the Zen meditation in China in the 6th Century CE (Common Era).

Later in the 19th century, the Zanzen discipline (of meditation) was introduced in the west by Japanese author and scholar Daisetsu Teitaro Suzuki.

Just to inform, D.T. Suzuki authored a number of books and essays on subjects like Zen, Shin, and Buddhism. His writings were instrumental in spreading these eastern practices and traditions to the west.

How To Do Zazen?

The practice of Zen meditation involves the following steps:

  • First of all, choose a clean and peaceful place to practice Zazen.
  • Take the position. Zazen is a seated meditation, so you need to sit straight with crossed legs on the floor (or anywhere you feel comfortable).
  • Relax for a while after getting into the right position.
  • Follow your breath. Keep in mind that you need to breathe through your nose.
  • It is advisable to keep your eyes half-closed. However, you can also choose to close them completely.
  • Eliminate all the thoughts crossing your mind and just focus on the breath
  • Do it for at least 10 minutes every day and witness the magical change in your world.
